Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 Sneak Previews

I normally don't like to post things that may be all over the web already but these new versions of Photoshop and Illustrator are too exciting - though I'd like to see much more of Illustrator CS6. You can download the free Photoshop CS6 beta now. There is no Illustrator beta available yet but the previews are just starting to be revealed by Adobe.

Illustrator Graphic Style of the Week - Ghost Copy

AI graphic styles can be huge productivity boosters. I create them all the time for future projects.

I'll be giving away an Ai file for free every week. You can learn more about graphic styles below.

Today's style is Ghost Copy. I made this one with the idea that it could come in handy for a minimalist movie poster. Let me know if you come up with an image using it.

How to Turn Anything Jet Black

Find out how to turn any color object into a believable jet black.

There are a ton of ways to change colors of objects in Photoshop. So many, in fact, that it's often difficult to choose the correct way to do it. But what happens when you try to turn objects into black? Do you simply remove the color and you're done? Usually doesn't work that way. All you're doing then is changing the object to gray.

I recently figured out how to do this in a few easy steps.

Here is the file I will start with. You can use any image that has jewelry in any color.

Step 1

Step 1

Make your selection of the object using any selection tools you like. In this case, I used the quick selection tool and zoomed in to clean it up.

Step 2

Step 2

Create a black and white adjustment layer with that selection. You can ignore the adjustments panel that will appear. We won't have to change anything there.

Step 3

CMD+click the Layer mask to make the same selection as before.

Step 3

Step 4

Create a new layer  and fill it with black (press ALT+Delete or go to Edit>Fill and choose black)

Step 5

This is where the magic happens.

Go into the style of the object by double-clicking on the layer. Be sure not to double-click on the name of the layer. This will open the Layer Style Panel.

Step 5 - Before

Step 6

Use the white slider below "Underlying Layer" to the left and split it until you get the highlights you want to pop out. What this does is bring the highlights of the layer underneath our black filled layer. This is what makes the effect realistic.

Step 6 - Before

Step 6 - After

Try using these same steps on anything you want. I found that it's worked with just about everything from furry materials to shiny diamonds.

Have you ever changed something to jet black? I'd love to see your before and afters. Leave a comment on Facebook, Twitter, or you can send a good old fashioned email to passthepen@gmail.com.

Illustrator Graphic Style of the Week - Shady Text

AI graphic styles can be huge productivity boosters. I create them all the time for future projects.

I'll be giving away an Ai file for free Every week. You can learn more about graphic styles below.

Today's style is Shady Text. This is going to work best if you use characters that are on the same base line. For example, for the image above I used the font Onyx in all-caps.

Illustrator Graphic Style of the Week - Auto Text Box 2

AI graphic styles can be huge productivity boosters. I create them all the time for future projects.

I'll be giving away an Ai file for free Every week. You can learn more about graphic styles below.

Today's style is Auto Text Box 2. If you have to put text in boxes all the time, this style makes it really easy. Instead of typing and then adding a separate box behind it, you can apply this from your graphic styles panel and adjust your text accordingly. Try it out and you'll see how easy it is. See my first automatic text graphic style here.

Veerle's Blog - Illustrator Pen Tool Exercises

The Pen tool in Illustrator has always been the bane of every beginner's existence. It's not as instinctive a tool as, say, the brush tools in Photoshop. But it is essential to master as it stands as the pinnacle of all vector tools.

After showing people the basics of how to use it, I always have to say, "The more you use it, the more you will learn it". I know this isn't what people want to hear and I don't blame them. Luckily, I found something to give my students more direction.

Visit Veerle's Blog for a great way to learn the Pen tool

In this post on Veerle's Blog, she gives you an Illustrator file with specific directions to follow with the Pen tool. The instructions are simple. Just download the Illustrator file and trace on top of each number in sequence while following the instructions. Doing these exercises will help you understand how the Pen tool works.

Veerle Pieters is an award winning web designer from Belgium who's work continues to inspire many in the industry. Check out Veerle's Blog and see for yourself.

Have you already tried this method? Let me know what you thought of it. Leave a comment on Facebook, Twitter, or you can send a good old fashioned email to passthepen@gmail.com.
